Gift of Sacrifce

King Buzzo with Trevor Dunn

Ipecac,  2020

Every artist I work with works in a different way. People often ask me how a record was made; how ideas came about. It seems that people want to know a simple formula, which I can understand. It’s grounding these formulas, categories, systems. Part of what I do is jog between systems, so to have to explain them all becomes tiresome, and who knows if I could even articulate a single one. A lot of what I did on this recording was off-the-cuff. I didn’t over-think it. In a sense, I only used part of my ear, holding on to rhythm and a general scope of direction while letting intuition make choices for me, separating my brain and body but making sure they were also in “sync” (whatever that means). Trust becomes a factor as well; being comfortable with relying on others; letting go. That’s some zen shit right there.
